Ling 730: Proseminar / FALL 2026 / Prosodic Universals

Quick links: Current | Past | Upcoming | Syllabus

Overview

A substantial body of cross-linguistic empirical documentation of prosodic phenomena has built up over the past few decades. It is ripe for critical examination towards discovering new potential prosodic universals, (re-)evaluating previously proposed ones, and identifying gaps in empirical coverage. These are the tasks of this course, which is also intended to give students hands-on experience with approaching systematic literature reviews, meta-studies, and developing databases. We take an encompassing perspective, with an eye towards bridging work below and above the word level, across areal regions, and across research communities.
